A Year of Stories

It has become common practice for people to do a “365 Project” these days. It might be photography or art, crafting  or scrapbooking or, I dunno, bank robbery. I have decided to do writing.

I used to write all the time. Look in my hard drive and you’ll see file after file of short stories, story outlines, character ideas, all the bricks and mortar of a writer. But somewhere…. Somewhere it all went away. I did NaNoWriMo a couple of times, but at some point the energy and enthusiasm that I had for writing fiction seemed to dissipate into the air. I still write, of course – I review books every week in my podcast, The Labyrinth Library – but it’s not the same. I miss the fugue state you get into when you’re writing a story, the way time just comes to a standstill until you break the surface again and take a deep breath. I miss meeting new characters and exploring new worlds and coming up with weird ways to make things work.

So this is my project: to write fiction every day, both for my own benefit and as part of WordPress’ “PostaDay” event for 2011. A bit of a late start, yes, but I’m sure they’re adult enough to deal with it.

The pieces I put up may not be related to each other in any form, they might be long or short, and there’s a good chance of a rather high crap-to-gold ratio. But you never know….
